C.P. SCHOOL
SEX EDUCATION
POLICY
Rationale
Sex
and relationship education is lifelong learning about physical , moral and emotional dvelopment. It is about the
understanding of the importance of marriage for family life, stable and loving
relationships, respect, love and care. It is also about the teaching of sex,
sexuality and sexual health.
Following
a review by staff and governors and consultation with parents in November 2005 it was decided that the school policy of Sex
Education should be:
That
children's questions will be answered openly and honestly and teachers will
encourage children to have due regard to moral consideration and the value of
family life.
If
the Headteacher considers that a particular Year 6 group should have more
formal sex education he/she will consult parents before doing so. Material books/videos which may be used will
be available for parents to see and comment on and all parents will be informed
of their rights to withdraw a child if they wish.
The
D.F.E recommends that all primary age children should have a sex and relationship programmes tailored to the
age and the physical and emotional maturity of the children. It should ensure
that both boys and girls know about puberty and how a baby is born as set out
in Key Stage 1 and 2 of the National Science Curriculum. The school will meet
these objectives with an age appropriate programme of sex and relationships
education..
At
primary level sex and relationship education should contribute to the foundation
of PSHE and citizenship by ensuring that all children:
·
Develop
confidence in talking, listening and thinking about feelings and relationships;
·
Are
able to name the parts of the body and describe how their bodies work;
·
Can
protect themselves and ask for help and support; and
·
Are
prepared for puberty.

Monitoring
and evaluation
The
headteacher is co-ordinator for this policy. All staff are responsible for the
delivery of the curriculum at the appropriate Key Stage and will be involved in
monitoring and evaluation. Puberty issues will be covered with the help of the
School Nurse for Y6 pupils.
Staff
must note the governors policy on sex education and must consult parents and
keep them informed of the right to withdraw their children
